By Crystal Sinclair

A bunch of years ago there was an all girl band from Britain that made the phrase “Girl Power” pretty popular. Sporty, Ginger, Scary, Posh and Baby Spice danced, posed and claimed they were singing about being strong, powerful, independent women. Today there are a lot of groups who also claim to give high school girls the confidence that they need in order to make it in a man’s world. Groups like the Pussycat Dolls or Destiny’s Child parade around in skimpy outfits and sing songs about bad relationships. Is this really girl power? I think girl power is the ability to stand up for yourself in the world.

Sara showed today what I think real girl power is – the ability to stand up for yourself and for what you believe in despite the social risks. Sara was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship and even though she knew that standing up to Chris was risky, she put herself first and broke free from a controlling relationship.

There are a lot of strong women out there who are really great role models for young people. One of the women I really admire is Buffy Sainte-Marie.  Buffy Sainte-Marie is probably one of the most influential Native American singer/songwriters of all time. She’s scored movies, released 17 albums and has a PHD in fine arts.  She also helped found the “Music of Aboriginal Canada” Juno award and has won an Academy Award for the song Up Where We Belong. She’s a very powerful voice in female strength.

Andrea Menard is another woman I admire.  She is a Metis singer, songwriter, actress and playwright. When it comes to the arts, she’s pretty much done it all. Andrea wrote a one woman play called The Velvet Devil, which was recently produced as a feature film. Andrea is definitely a great example of a woman who has a lot of girl power. She also looks a lot like my Dad’s girlfriend, Joanne.

When she was 26 years old, Cindy Klassen won five Olympic medals at the 2006 Winter Olympics. She has won a total of six medals in her career, making her the largest Olympic medal holder of any Canadian athlete in either the summer or winter Olympics. She also holds the most Olympic medals out of any speed skater to ever compete at the games. Cindy Klassen is a true woman of power.

I hope I’ve proved that there is more to girl power than prancing around in scantily clad clothing, singing songs about other girl’s boyfriends.

Stay strong,
Crystal.
